The Urdu language is the official language of Pakistan and India. It is spoken by approximately 160 million people and is ranked 19-21 on the list of languages by number of native speakers. Urdu belongs to the Indo-European language family along with the Romance languages such as French, Italian, Romanian, Spanish, and Portuguese and the Germanic languages such as Dutch, English, Norwegian, and Swedish among others. In the Urdu language the Urdu alphabet (Nasta'liq script) is used for writing.
