The Swahili language is the official language of Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, also spoken in Rwanda, Burundi, Congo (DRC), Somalia, Comoros Islands, Mozambique, Malawi, and Oman. It is spoken by approximately 50 million people and belongs to the Bantu language branch of the Niger-Congo language family. Other languages of the Niger-Congo language family include, Yoruba, Igbo, Shona, Zulu, Nyanja, Lingala, Kinyarwanda, Xhosa, Luba-Kasai and Umbundu. Swahili has borrowed words from other languages such as Arabic and the word “Swahili” literally means the coast and was used by early Arab visitors to the coast.
